One of the most popular posts on Husbands That Cook is our Ube Cake with Vanilla Marshmallow Cream. We fell in love with ube the first time we tried it in the form of a creamy ube milkshake at a local restaurant here in Eagle Rock. As soon as we got home, we headed to the kitchen and figured out how to turn this vibrant root vegetable into a beautiful cake. Ube is a Filipino purple yam, and its sweet, nutty flavor is used in many desserts and traditional confections. Today we are featuring it in the form of these adorable ube whoopie pies. With their striking color and distinct ube flavor, your friends will be mesmerized when you set a platter of these tantalizing treats on the table. Let us show you how the magic happens…

Our living room is glowing. Yes, this holiday season is going to feel very different, but we are making the best of it: playing Christmas music on repeat and sipping bourbon cream as we hang colorful decorations around the house. And even though we’ve been a couple for almost two decades, this will be the first Christmas tree we’ve ever put up together. Normally in December we fly to Portland, Oregon to visit Ryan’s family, but since we won’t be traveling anytime soon, we wanted to re-create that welcoming, festive atmosphere here in our own home. So this year will have firsts for both of us: Ryan’s first Christmas away from his parents and brothers, and Adam’s first tree of his own, since he grew up celebrating Hanukkah, eating latkes and noodle kugel, and lighting the menorah instead. Well, right now the Husbands’ house is extra sparkly because this winter we are lighting up both. And since many families will be apart this season, we were inspired to create something special to try and make up for it. If we had to pick just one word to describe this heavenly treat, that word would be “cloud.” When you take one bite of this soft, cake-like cookie, you will understand exactly what we mean. Here to make everything merry and bright, would you please welcome this holiday hero, Gingerbread Whoopie Pies with Vanilla Marshmallow Cream.

If you like chocolate, coffee, and cake, today is your lucky day. And if you’ve never baked a cake before, let this easy one-bowl recipe be your first! Ryan made a similar cake in a kids cooking class when he was just 5 years old, so if that precocious kindergartener with baby blonde curls could pull it off, then you, too, will be able to impress your friends and family this holiday season with this decadent dessert. Rich, moist, and ultra-chocolatey, please welcome your new go-to chocolate cake recipe. We know what you were thinking when you saw the word “vegan” in the title—how can you bake a cake without eggs, butter, or milk? Sit back, relax, and we’ll let you in on a few of our secrets.
brown butter cinnamon crumb coffee cake muffins
Repeat after us: Brown Butter Cinnamon Crumb Coffee Cake Muffins! We’re excited to share these special treats with you. This recipe was adapted from Adam’s grandmother who would make her famous coffee cake for every holiday and special occasion. We included the cake recipe in our cookbook, and today we’ve turned them into cute individual muffins for the blog. This year, make the holidays memorable by baking homemade treats for everyone on your list. Wrap these mini-cakes in a festive box (if you don’t inhale the entire batch yourself) or bring them to your next outdoor socially-distanced gathering. It’s the perfect dessert to safely share with no plates or silverware required. Happy baking!
