One of the most popular posts on Husbands That Cook is our Ube Cake with Vanilla Marshmallow Cream. We fell in love with ube the first time we tried it in the form of a creamy ube milkshake at a local restaurant here in Eagle Rock. As soon as we got home, we headed to the kitchen and figured out how to turn this vibrant root vegetable into a beautiful cake. Ube is a Filipino purple yam, and its sweet, nutty flavor is used in many desserts and traditional confections. Today we are featuring it in the form of these adorable ube whoopie pies. With their striking color and distinct ube flavor, your friends will be mesmerized when you set a platter of these tantalizing treats on the table. Let us show you how the magic happens…

Our living room is glowing. Yes, this holiday season is going to feel very different, but we are making the best of it: playing Christmas music on repeat and sipping bourbon cream as we hang colorful decorations around the house. And even though we’ve been a couple for almost two decades, this will be the first Christmas tree we’ve ever put up together. Normally in December we fly to Portland, Oregon to visit Ryan’s family, but since we won’t be traveling anytime soon, we wanted to re-create that welcoming, festive atmosphere here in our own home. So this year will have firsts for both of us: Ryan’s first Christmas away from his parents and brothers, and Adam’s first tree of his own, since he grew up celebrating Hanukkah, eating latkes and noodle kugel, and lighting the menorah instead. Well, right now the Husbands’ house is extra sparkly because this winter we are lighting up both. And since many families will be apart this season, we were inspired to create something special to try and make up for it. If we had to pick just one word to describe this heavenly treat, that word would be “cloud.” When you take one bite of this soft, cake-like cookie, you will understand exactly what we mean. Here to make everything merry and bright, would you please welcome this holiday hero, Gingerbread Whoopie Pies with Vanilla Marshmallow Cream.

It’s beginning to look a lot like autumn. The weather in L.A. is finally cool enough to open the windows and let a fresh breeze flow through our house. The constant low rumbling of the air conditioner which hums all summer long is now replaced with sounds from outside: birds singing, bees buzzing, and distant echos of the high school marching band practicing for their homecoming game. This morning, it was even chilly enough to wear robes for the first time in months. So as we watch the peaches and tomatoes of August magically transform into pumpkins and apples, we tip our hats farewell to summer and pop a cork to this brand new season. You’ll want to break out your finest bubbly for this beauty that we’re sharing today—we certainly did after taking our first bite. Will you please welcome to the stage… Apple Brown Butter Whoopie Pies with Chai Marshmallow Cream. And yes, they are just as dreamy as they sound!

Fall is our cat’s favorite time of year. As the weather starts to cool, she likes being indoors with us, watching the leaves change colors, listening to the soothing sounds of an occasional southern California rain (when we are lucky), and enjoying the cozy, fragrant aromas of freshly baked pies and hot apple cider. But most of all… Sylvia is obsessed with pumpkin! We gave it to her as a kitten, and now she loves it so much that we have to be careful saying the word around her. We’ll have to figure out something soon, because now she’s starting to catch on when we spell out P-U-M-P-K-I-N. This dessert—which features her favorite ingredient—caught our attention three years ago while it was circulating the internet with its extraordinary photo and dreamy title, and there is no excuse why we haven’t made it until now, especially with a name that is so appealing and fun to announce: pumpkin whoopie pies with maple marshmallow cream.
